<p><strong>&quot;Domaining Domainers&quot; </strong>the place to auction, buy, discuss, learn, sell, trade or watch domains and the domain names industry. Welcome to the future of online properties, <a title="VRE live" href="http://vrelive.com" target="_blank" rel="tag">VRE live</a> the virtual real estate boom has begun.</p>
<p>For our first post we present the &#8216;Definition of Domaining&quot; and a touch of domainers buzz via <a href="http://money.cnn.com" target="_blank">CNN Money</a>.</p>
<p>Via Wikipedia:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Domaining</strong> is the <a class="zem_slink" title="Business" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">business</a> of buying, selling, developing and <a class="mw-redirect" title="Monetizing" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monetizing">monetizing</a> Internet <a class="mw-redirect" title="Domain names" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_names">domain names</a>. Such domain name portfolios often include marketable generic dictionary-word domain names, or domains whose registrations had lapsed yet still retain reasonable traffic. Domain names are the addresses of <a class="zem_slink" title="World Wide Web" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wide_Web" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">the web</a> and come in a wide variety of extensions (<a title=".com" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.com">.com</a> being the most popular). </li>
<li><strong>Domainers</strong> is a slang term for individuals, companies, or organizations whose business model includes accumulating a portfolio of generic <a class="zem_slink" title="Domain name" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">internet domain names</a>. Although controversially and mistakenly compared to <a class="mw-redirect" title="Cybersquatters" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybersquatters">cybersquatters</a>, Domainers differentiate and legitimize themselves by avoiding trademarked names and potentially contentious domain names, and refraining from <a title="Typosquatting" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typosquatting">typosquatting</a>. They consider their conduct in buying, selling, and developing domain names to be in the same spirit as <a title="Real estate" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_estate">real estate</a> investing. Domainers generate revenue via <a title="Domain parking" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_parking">domain parking</a>, through the resale of domain names and by developing domain names into fully functioning websites.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domaining#cite_note-0">[1]</a> Domainers are also sometimes referred to as <em>domain investors</em> and <em>commercial registrants</em> and <em>bulk registrants</em>. </li>
<li><strong><a class="zem_slink" title="Domain parking" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_parking" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Domain parking</a></strong> is an advertising practice used primarily by <a title="Domain name registrar" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_registrar">domain name registrars</a> and internet advertising publishers to monetize <a title="Type-in traffic" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type-in_traffic">type-in traffic</a> visiting an under-developed <a title="Domain name" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name">domain name</a>. The domain name will usually resolve to a page containing advertising listings and links. These links will be targeted to the predicted interests of the visitor and may change dynamically based on the results that visitors click on. Usually the domain owner is paid based on how many links have been visited (e.g. <a title="Pay per click" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pay_per_click">pay per click</a>) and on how beneficial those visits have been. The keywords for any given domain name provide clues as to the intent of the visitor before arriving.
<p>Another use of domain parking is to be a placeholder of an existing <a class="mw-redirect" title="Web site" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_site">web site</a>. A company might choose to use this method to redirect its website traffic to another website it owns</p>
</li>
<li><strong>Domain Name:</strong>The term <em>domain name</em> has multiple related meanings: </li>
</ul>
<ol>
<li>A name that identifies a computer or computers on <a class="zem_slink" title="Internet" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">the Internet</a>. These names appear as a component of a <a class="mw-redirect" title="Web site" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_site">Web site</a>&#8217;s <a title="Uniform Resource Locator" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Resource_Locator">URL</a>, e.g. en.wikipedia.org. This type of domain name is also called a <a title="Hostname" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostname">hostname</a>. </li>
<li>The product that <a title="Domain name registrar" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_registrar">domain name registrars</a> provide to their customers. These names are often called <strong>registered domain names</strong>. </li>
<li>Names used for other purposes in the <a title="Domain Name System" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System">Domain Name System</a> (DNS), for example the special name which follows the @ sign in an <a class="mw-redirect" title="Email" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email">email</a> address, or the <a title="Top-level domain" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top-level_domain">Top-level domain</a> names like .com, or the names used by the <a title="Session Initiation Protocol" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_Initiation_Protocol">Session Initiation Protocol</a> (<a class="mw-redirect" title="VoIP" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VoIP">VoIP</a>), or <a title="DomainKeys" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DomainKeys">DomainKeys</a>. </li>
<li>They are sometimes colloquially (and incorrectly) referred to by marketers as &quot;web addresses&quot;. </li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Some buzz about the domain owners world from CNN Money at a live domaineers party.</strong></p>
<blockquote><div class="storybyline">By <a href="http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/business2_archive/2005/12/01/8364591/index.htm">Paul Sloan</a> Money.CNN.com      </div>
<div class="storytimestamp">December 1, 2005</div>
<p>(Business 2.0) &#8211; On a balmy night in late October, hundreds of partiers, most sporting red or blue Hawaiian shirts, pack the Delux nightclub in Delray Beach, Fla. It&#8217;s a swank place&#8211;outdoor decks, two bars, plush, bed-size sofas scattered throughout&#8211;and the crowd arrives in chartered buses and stretch Hummers. Many head straight for the guy rolling cigars and toss back shots as if it were 1999. Which, to them, it might as well be.</p>
<p>They call themselves domainers. They make their living buying and selling domain names and turning their Web traffic into cash&#8211;lots of it. They have gathered in Delray Beach for a trade show called Traffic that this year boasts 300 paying attendees, more than twice the number that came for the first show, in &#8216;04.</p>
</blockquote>
<p><em>As of December 2006 there are an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 individuals globally who make buying and selling domain names a part of their business</em>. <a title="USA Today" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_Today">USA Today</a> reported that many Domainers prefer to remain anonymous due to the competitive and controversial nature of their business.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domaining#cite_note-1">[2]</a> In this same <em>USA Today</em> report, it is stated that known sales of 5,851 domain names generated $29 million in 2005, compared with known sales of 3,813 names for $15 million in 2004.</p>
